Tips for Parents

Social networking sites are a great way to keep connected with friends and family. Many school aged children have one or more social networking sites such as Facebook or My Space. A profile is made which includes a person’s likes or dislikes, pictures of themselves and their friends, and online “posts” or comments. Many elementary children in Ohio say that their parents and even their grandparents have a social networking site. Many have even “friended” their parents. This is a great way for parents to monitor what their children are doing online. There have been though, many stories in the news about how children are posting inappropriate pictures and language on their sites. In fact, when asked, some say that they have had their accounts “hacked into” by someone  or that they have received a “friend” request from someone they don’t know.
It is important to remember to tell your child that if they ever receive a communication, in words or text, that scares them, that they need to tell you. Also, on all social networking sites there is a place that you or your child can report abusive or inappropriate behavior.
